MySelf Healthcare

A digital therapy app designed to support speech and language development in children at home during the waitlist period and in between sessions

Speech and language difficulties can have a profound impact on a child’s academic, social, and long-term career prospects. Children with communication challenges often struggle to engage with classroom learning, interact with peers, and develop meaningful relationships. The consequences extend into adulthood. Research shows that 88% of unemployed young men have speech and language difficulties. 79% of the UK prison population has speech, language and communication challenges. Without early intervention, these issues persist, affecting educational outcomes, employment opportunities, and social integration.

Speech and language therapists play a crucial role in supporting these children, but access to therapy is limited, and traditional interventions often fail to engage children effectively.

Fiona McCormick, a speech and language therapist, wanted to address this problem. As part of Cohort 1 of the Health Innovation East Digital Hub, she developed MySelf Healthcare, a digital tool that delivered structured, at-home exercises that reinforce therapy sessions. This empowers parents and caregivers to make progress during the waitlist period and in between sessions.
