A gamified app to guide investments in Australia’s youth mental healthcare
Cogniss CEO Leon Young and University of Sydney PhD candidate Grace Lee come together on A future me problem (previously known as The Informed) to discuss the impact of technology in research. A future me problem is a leading mental health podcast hosted by Samuel Hockey.
In this episode, Grace talks about her experience using Cogniss to build a game-based survey app that serves as a data collection tool.
The Cogniss platform enabled her to create a digital solution that engages research participants through a story of a fictional character having mental health issues. A significant aspect of the platform, for her, is that the apps created on it can be iterated over time.
Leon shares his perspective on the steps involved in gamifying a survey app, how to engage participants over a long period of time, and more.
Samuel, who has a background in design, draws a parallel between Canva and Cogniss. He points out that they both offer solutions for non-experts in design and behavior change app building respectively.

About Right Care, first time, where you live
It is a project established by The University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre. It brings an evidence-based discipline to investments in Australia’s youth mental health systems that will provide young people with timely access to the right level of care, delivered early in the course of illness, and for a sufficiently long-period, to ensure that they thrive economically and socially.
