iPoorly

A symptom checker app to support parents of young children

Parents of children under five frequently encounter symptoms of acute childhood illnesses, which are sudden in onset but short-term. These symptoms can be challenging for parents to interpret, often leading to anxiety about whether medical help is needed. Current resources for understanding children’s symptoms may be limited or generalized, failing to provide specific, actionable guidance.

A team at the University of Plymouth set out to create a just-in-time tool that helps parents assess the severity of a child’s symptoms, guiding them on when and how to seek help.

Building a clinically informed, parent-friendly app required a solution that could support complex decision trees while remaining easy to use and modify.

Developed using Cogniss, the iPoorly app provides tailored guidance on symptoms and suggests appropriate actions based on the severity and nature of the symptoms.

Key Features

  • Easy symptom input: Allows parents to quickly input symptoms such as fever, cough or rash. The app categorizes these symptoms, providing relevant information specific to the child’s age.

  • Tailored recommendations: Based on the entered symptoms, iPoorly offers recommendations on how to care for the child and indicates when it may be necessary to seek medical advice.

  • Evidence-based information: Content developed in collaboration with healthcare experts, ensuring accurate, research-based guidance.

By offering parents clear, evidence-based recommendations, iPoorly helps alleviate uncertainty and supports informed decision-making.
