Tackling Tinnitus
A self-help intervention app that empowers individuals with tinnitus
Tinnitus affects about 15% of people worldwide, manifesting as ringing or buzzing in the ears without an external source. This condition disrupts concentration, sleep, and overall quality of life, with severe impact for about 1-2% of sufferers.
Dr. Vinaya Manchaiah, a professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Director of Audiology, specializes in hearing and balance disorders. Recognizing the limitations of existing treatments for tinnitus, Vinaya and his team sought a more effective solution. His collaborators include Professor Gerhard Andersson from Linköping University and Dr Eldré Beukes from Anglia Ruskin University.
Together they developed Tackling Tinnitus–a research program that utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques to help users manage symptoms effectively. However, this program could not be used outside the research settings due to ambiguity around compliance and IP ownership. Using Cogniss, they were able to quickly re-platform the program, into a secure, scalable, native mobile app. This transition means that they own the intellectual property of the program and will be able to make the program accessible to patients worldwide.
Key Features of the app
Self-guided, eight-week program, with flexible scheduling for users
CBT Techniques that focus on altering negative thought patterns
A range of strategies that help with focus shifting, deep relaxation, quick relaxation, sleep, improving focus and more
Practice worksheets monitoring progress and hybrid weekly check-ins with clinicians
Available in the app stores (iOS | Android), Tackling Tinnitus is the most evidence-based self-help program in the world available for tinnitus patients, with numerous randomized control trials (RCTs) conducted around the globe. The studies have found compelling evidence that 60-70% of program participants experience clinically meaningful change that lasts for at least a year.
Vinaya’s team continues to seek partners to expand the app's reach, aiming to make this effective tool accessible and affordable.
