Cogniss showcases the power of no code: Builds a digital health app in 11 hours

At the recent World Health Organization's (WHO) Second Symposium on the Future of Digital Health Systems, Cogniss, a UK-based health tech firm, demonstrated the power of their no-code technology by building a prevention app for non-communicable diseases (NCD) in just 11 hours.

Creating sustainable, region and culture-specific digital health solutions that integrate with the health systems is a challenging endeavour. Even the first version of a basic health app can cost up to £250K to develop, with 1500-1800 hours required just for the development time.

Enter no-code platforms for digital health. Cogniss, a UK-headquartered health tech firm, showcased the extraordinary power of their no-code ecosystem for developing digital health solutions, while participating in an international symposium on the future of digital health recently hosted by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Porto, Portugal.

As part of the event, the attendees participated in a poll to choose between the two app ideas they wanted to see built live during the symposium. 63% of the votes went to 'Thrive360', the NCD prevention idea, over the other one that focused on delivering care during health emergencies. The Cogniss team then developed the chosen app over just 11 hours, throughout which the participants were able to access and view the app at various stages of its build.

The 'Thrive360' app, focused on remote populations over 40, captures user demographics and health details, facilitates daily goals setting, offers daily check-ins to keep you on track with your goals, and provides personalised screening suggestions and bite-sized educational content.

To achieve this feat, Cogniss came prepared with an action plan, utilised publicly available content, Canva for graphics and the pre-built functionalities of their no-code platform. The 11-hour timeframe was spent refining and uploading the content, and configuring pre-built features. Apart from Cogniss CEO Leon Young who built the app at the event, two team members were available offsite for support on content development, graphical and technical aspects.

Leon Young said: “It was an exciting couple of days. We kept sharing the progress of the app with the participants and received incredible feedback throughout the app build. The fact that we built the first fully functional prototype within 11 hours, proves just how game-changing specialised health no-code platforms can be.”

Helen Caton-Peters, Regional Digital HealthTechnical Officer with the Digital Health Flagship at WHO/Europe, sees no-code as a promising way to address health equity and reduce burden faced by the health workforce. “Our recently launched report on digital health across the WHO European region shows that countries are improving delivery of equitable, high quality and safe healthcare to their citizens through digital means. No code platforms can potentially be a low-cost, high-reward approach that can empower the health workforce and patients to design effective user centred digital solutions quickly,” Ms. Caton-Peters noted.

Dr Lloyd Humphreys, Managing Director of Cogniss and a speaker at the Symposium, said: "By reducing time constraints, no-code can make it possible for healthcare experts to promptly transform their innovative ideas into practical digital health tools, without need for big budgets, technical teams or resources. We believe that the cumulative impact of these highly-targeted and impactful solutions, if integrated well with the health systems, can be truly significant," he says.

This demonstration highlights the promise of no-code platforms like Cogniss in addressing global healthcare challenges by delivering timely, efficient, and impactful digital health solutions.
